Smithfield Birmingham, an iconic scheme to transform part of the city centre has taken the next steps in its journey, as works have begun on site.
The plans, approved by the city council last year, include the transformation of over 40 acres, creating 3,000 new homes, 2m sq ft of commercial space and huge areas of public realm. Over 8,000 new jobs will be created within the city centre, with the total project worth over a staggering £1.9 billion.
Not only backed by the local council, but also by the Crown Estate, this is one of the many regeneration projects taking place across the city, with new investment establishing Birmingham as one of the fastest growing cities in the UK. Recently, the plans for Smithfield Birmingham have come to fruition, with the city council confirming archaeological works had begun on site, marketing an “important new phase” for this regeneration project.
Sharon Thompson, deputy leader at Birmingham City Council, described Smithfield as “one of the most significant regeneration projects in the city’s history. We are committed to ensuring that its future is built on a deep respect for its past.”
