In the recently announced The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026, the University of Birmingham received specific awards, in addition to climbing the rankings significantly.
The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026 is widely acknowledged as a definitive guide for UK higher education, with 67 subject tables, based on four indicators: student satisfaction, research quality, entry standards and graduate prospects. Only 18% of the UK’s universities make it to the prestigious ranking list, with the University of Birmingham among these.
For the first time in its 32-year history, the Oxbridge Universities were knocked down from the elite top 3 positions. The University of Birmingham was ranked number 16, climbing an impressive 6 places.
Professor Deborah Longworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Birmingham said: “As we celebrate our 125th anniversary this year, I’m delighted that Birmingham has been recognised in these latest Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide rankings. These latest rankings reflect our ongoing commitment to improving the experience for every student. We continue to deliver the highest quality academic experience – stretching and challenging our students to achieve a degree that will enhance professional opportunities around the world, and to contribute to society as leaders, innovators, and global citizens.”
Not only did the University of Birmingham achieve an impressive overall score, it also received an award, securing the accolade of Highly Commended University of the Year 2026.
Firmly established as a top university city within the UK, Birmingham attracts over 80,000 students each year, from over 150 countries.
